Village Fair

My friend and former housemate runs a skittle alley annually in a village fair not too far from Oxford. Simon and I, and some friends, like to go because it is just such a lovely day out. It is a proper English old village fete with ferret roulette, a tea and cake tent, and a raffle. Like out of an Agatha Christie! You can sit in a tractor, pet some Shetland ponies, and enter your pet dog in the dog show. There is also a 'drink a yard of ale' competition (that is 3 and a half pints of ale in a long tube), the fastest time was 13 seconds.
Pimms

I however drank Pimms.

Faircakebakewell

Homemade Bakewell Tart in the tea tent. The jam tasted homemade too. I think I have had my sugar intake for the week. These older lady bakers can have quite a liberal hand when it comes to the icing.

Animalvegetable

The winner in the 'Vegetable Dressed as a Animal' category. I think this was a potato dressed as a sheep. Hee!

Wildflowerinatray

Winner in the 'Wildgarden in a Seedtray' competition.

Buttonholes

Wedding buttonhole winners.

Daisyarrangement

I heart arrangements like this!

Soundsystem

There were many announcements about the start of races (egg and spoon, sack race), winners of the raffle, and how the dog show was doing.

Teatent

In the beer tent.

Icecreamsheepfair

Children running around with ice creams.

Peardrops

My friend bought pear drops from the sweet stall. So evocative of being a kid, however they aren't something that I would enjoy now.

Balloon

The weather was quite warm but overcast.

Redkite

A Red Kite circled overhead as we were leaving.

A good day.

Very beautiful photographs… extremely nostalgic for me, immediately conjuring memories of attending summer fetes as a child… lovely!

Amazing! I wish I could have been there. Great photos. I’d never seen pear candies liek that before, but certainly have had similar gummy candy. I dislike it now too, but loved it as a kid, strange how we grow up and tastes change…
