blue top (with two sides)

I made a new top! I was fretting about not having had any new clothes for work in ages but I didn't want to spend anything so I decided to make something. To get the general shape and size I measured around a top I already had. I used some fabric that I bought at a charity sale a short time ago. I am not sure if the pattern is batik? It looks like it has been done by hand.

I got this idea to make a top with two sides where each side would work equally well as the front or as the back. For maximum variety! So one side is like this:

Bluetop2

And the other side is like this:

Bluetop1

I like to think that either side does work equally well as the front or back :) I wore the more ruffled side at the front today.

Oh, my, it looks perfect! How did you make this? With a sewing machine? What kind of fabric is that? Lately I have been thinking I really ought to get to sewing, but I have no idea where to begin. That top looks exactly like what I would like to make, though. Nicely done :)
I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, but never commented before. I really like your pictures, and I loved the LEGO ice cubes and the video of the cat with a paperbag on its head :)

Alice, you are a very talented seamstress. It is not easy to sew something without a pattern.

    Ah thank you! :D
I used a sewing machine. I think it is medium weight cotton. My main tip for sewing tops is to study a top that you already have that you like and then copy it. That is my favourite method :) I also find ironing each piece as I go so it is flat really helps. The other tool I used was a Bias Tape Maker which is a cheap little gadget that helps to make bias tape like I used as the straps and edging at the top.
If I had been using really expensive fabric I would have mocked the top up first in a cheaper fabric but as I got this fabric for ¬£2 I wasn’t too anxious and so I just winged it.
