Show & tell: baskets for summer

baskets_may10_004My new bike basket, I got it a few weeks ago. The last one had snapped off during the winter, I need one anyway but there is this moment I look forward to every year when it is British strawberry season and I can bike home from the market with a couple of punnets in my basket and the smell for the strawberries flies up in my face, utter bliss!

My previous bike baskets have been of the black wire variety, I went for this as you can clip it on and off the front of the bike so I take it into the shops with me. I hadn’t thought too much about what it would look like when I carry it around as it was mainly a practical decision but it actually gets quite a lot of positive comments and smiles from strangers. Anabela and Tommy are style leaders in the wicker field :)

baskets_may10_003This one is from a local shop, not expensive, it seems best to look for wicker in local places and secondhand. You don’t have to go far in this part of the world to come across wicker baskets or woven bags.

baskets_may10_002This was from a fair trade stall, I seem to remember it is made from plastic bags or something.

I think I have the same basket as you – mine locks on and off with a key, unfortunately I’ve lost the key, so no more taking it off – it’s very sad! Bikes with baskets are still the best, though.

Mine doesn’t have a key, that would have been a good idea. At the moment I have to get my lock through the handle if I need to leave it.

      :)

i’m quite jealous of your basket collection! especially the bag that may be made from plastic bags… it’s definitely something i’d use myself.

Maybe you can find one too? It was from a stall that was selling different fair trade crafts from different parts of Africa :)

As discussed before, I love your bag taste. :) Love the stripey fair trade one. My bike basket (black wire) also snapped recently but I was hoping to salvage it with a black leather strap. I migggght treat myself to a new one, though. Really like yours.

I like yours, especially the fair trade one. I was just restoring a basket I found in Spitalfields today. Couldn’t believe how dirty it was. I gave it a shower!
