Happiness is…

…a bicycle, a camera, and a sunny morning. YEAH!

Also best when you still have the hand stamp from the gig the night before on your hand :)

The bicycle I am riding here is Janice, a Specialized Dolce. It’s a great bike, so speedy, as good as Gloria but in a different way. You get to see all sorts of things…

This is what I usually wear for cycling longer distances, some sort of shirt, looser black trousers, and PF Flyers. I prefer to wear a shirt as if it’s cold or too sunny you can roll down the sleeves and if it rains it’s not too clingy.

Day In The Life Revisited 2

So another Day In The Life day was declared for Sunday. This is what I did.

I got up at about 6am, I really didn’t feel like eating anything as I’d been at a BBQ until late the night before but I have learned from experience that it’s not a good idea to go on long cycle rides unfueled. So sat outside with the cats and slowly ate a sesame bagel with marmalade. I also had a teaspoon of spirulina mixed with apple juice which is something I’m trying at the moment, I have no idea if it makes a difference. I then pottered about, had a shower, tidied up, and so on.

At 8am I headed off out. Recently most mornings I have been cycling 30 miles before work to get my strength on my bike up (also it’s really fun). To do that before work means I usually have to be out and about brutally early so as it was Sunday it was nice not to be in too much of a rush. My routine is to cycle 15 miles, stop and eat a banana, then cycle 15 miles back. In this instance the bananas were all too black to take with me (more on them later). The route I took was roughly along the new commute I will be doing from next week, I have tried it several times now because Gloria is heavy so it really helps to learn where the steep bits are. I was having such a nice time I actually went a few extra miles until my conscience started reminding me to get back.

I took my weekly bike-on-gate picture that I put on Instagram. This is the non-Instagram version.

Later I stopped to take pictures of Gloria on a hill to show the new additions, I’ll probably post them this week sometime.

At the moment the hedges are full of edibles, so when I cycle I keep one eye on the hedge ready to slam on my brakes if I see something good. Look here, the main ingredients for apple and blackberry crumble in one bush.

Then I headed home, had a second shower, ate a quick sandwich, and was picked up to go and play bass.

Wearing my 2nd favourite socks. Mustardy.

There for 5 hours.

Mostly hard working but a bit of larking about.

Then home, we went to a local pizza place, Fratelli’s, for a takeaway pizza. This is their reading material while you wait. Then home again to eat it, started watching Of Gods and Men but stopped to listen to the local music show, BBC Introducing Oxford.

I made two loaves of gluten free banana walnut bread with the ripe bananas mentioned earlier. Downloaded and edited these pictures. Handwashed a top, a cardigan, and the other delicates. Then at midnight to sleep.

The end :) How was your Sunday?

Oh and this is the recipe for the gluten free banana bread, I have posted it before, it’s my sister’s recipe to which I added the walnuts. Having made it many times I think the quality of the rice flour matters, some are more grainy than others.

Gluten-Free Banana Walnut Bread

175g brown rice flour
50g cornflour
75g walnut pieces
100g caster sugar
2 teaspoons gluten-free baking powder
2 pinches salt
100g unsalted butter
3 mashed bananas
2 large eggs

1kg loaf tin greased

1. Preheat oven to 180 C or 350 F
2. Cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs one by one. Mix in the banana.
3. Sift the brown rice flour, the cornflour, the baking powder, and the salt. Mix into the banana mixture, then add the walnuts.
4. Pour into the loaf tin and bake for 1 hour until a skewer comes out clean and the top is very golden.
5. Remove from tin and cool on a rack.

Pashley Princess Sovereign (aka Gloria)

Check it out! My pride and joy!

I have had it for a few weeks now and I thought I’d give my first impressions. I generally do between 45 mins to 2 hours cycling per day. I’ve never driven as pretty much everything I do day-to-day happens by bike. For the past few years my main bike has been a hybrid Trek which has been great, however as the distances I need to get to have been creeping up I felt it was time for me to invest a little more. I did huge amounts of research and hand wringing to decide and finally chose the Pashley Princess Sovereign. My main criteria was that I wanted a bicycle that was very very comfortable, the speed didn’t matter that much, neither did its capability with hills as Oxford is flatish. I had a price in mind that I of course went beyond. I also wanted a bike that would last a very long time, that was handmade locally (Stratford), and that looked nice. I’ve called it Gloria as I couldn’t think of a name until I was cycling along in the sunshine thinking “isn’t this glorious”… :)

On Sunday I took the bike for its first long distance ride by taking the train out West towards the Cotswolds and then cycled back. It was really great! 24 miles total in 2 hours isn’t bad. Downsides I’d say were that hills were pretty brutal, Gloria doesn’t have much momentum up them so it’s raw thigh power and I was afraid of being too savage as it’s a new bike before its first service. Even pushing the bike up hills was a workout as it’s so heavy. The downhills were brilliant though. I returned not very tired at all although Gloria has developed a slight creak somewhere that I will look into.

A general modification I have made was that I took off the huge front basket, I like to be able to see the road but also wanted less wind resistance and the basket is very very loud, constantly creaking. I haven’t yet removed the black bracket that the basket sits on, I may do this.

The other thing I did was to add Brooks Plump Leather Grips rather than the Pashley grips. I constantly have calluses across my palms from cycling so I really hope these will help stop that as I feel people notice them when we shake hands. The grips are also much more comfortable and warm to hold.

For the longer ride I added a Cateye Strada wireless bike computer, I’m going to keep it on this bike as it’s interesting to know the times and speeds. Gloria comes with lots of great features like a dynamo lighting system. Something I haven’t had in ages that I get here is one of those integrated pinch locks that is permanently fixed to the back wheel. No way would this be the only lock I’d use, I also have an expensive Kryptonite lock that I am very fearful of dropping on my foot as it is so sturdy. With integrated locks the key has to stay in the lock when it is not locked. I’m not so keen on having all my keys hanging there while cycling around so I have improvised a key ring for now with some gingham ribbon to tie the two lock keys together.

The Brooks seat has been great so far, very comfortable. I’ve been treating it with tallow.

So it’s a fantastic bike. There are quite a few differences compared to a hybrid. On this bike I sit completely upright which I really enjoy as it means my back and arms can be very relaxed and I can look around a lot more. The enclosed chain case means I no longer have to wear a bike clip or roll up my trousers on my right leg. Its balance is really nice, like a tall ship sailing along. The Sturmey Archer hub gears mean pausing cycling when changing gears which I am still getting used to, this I find particularly odd on hills as I’m used to gradually clicking through the gears as the hill gets steeper. I do miss the very fast acceleration that I have had on lighter bikes but once you get going on this bike you feel you could go forever which is a fantastic feeling. I will report back again in a few months to say how Gloria is doing.

lights

This is the tree at my work, I think it’s lovely. The top is the misty lunchtime view and the picture above is at about 6pm-ish.

These decorations on the High Street made me VERY HAPPY. Aren’t they cool? So much more interesting than the usual snowflakes etc. Well done Oxford City council. The first time I saw these was after working late and I was tired and cycling home in the freezing weather, to look up and see these magical lit up bikes was wonderful. They look how I feel when cycling on a good day :)

bicycle back basket hamper

Yes more wicker! This is it for now with the wicker madness I promise :) Moving into winter means preparing for winter cycling, maintainence, and things like fitting new brake pads and checking the lights are in working order. When thinking about what I needed for the winter I also fancied getting some small storage for the back. The bike shop fitted a back rack for me and I bought a little hamper from EBay for about £10, this I fixed on with cable ties.

Handy for transporting my lunch to work and little bits of shopping. I like how it looks, the handle and straps look like a face maybe?
