Berlin Guide

Berlin is a fantastic city to visit. I have a family base in Berlin so I visit often, it is one of my favourite cities as there are seemingly unlimited things to see, do, and eat! I have listed some of the places that I’ve enjoyed and I have starred * my very favourites. I will keep the list updated. There is a Google Map of everything at the end of the page.


Most of these have a programme of exhibitions that changes regularly so check what’s on before going.

Bauhaus Museum
Exhibitions on the history and influence of the Bauhaus school of architecture, design and art.

Berlinisches Galerie
A museum of modern art, photography and architecture.

Buchstaben Museum (Museum of Letters)
A museum dedicated to preserving, restoring and exhibiting signage from Berlin and around the world.

C/O Berlin *
An art space of changing exhibitions in the recently restored Amerika Haus near the Zoologischer Garten.

Hamburger Bahnhof *
An old station containing a variety of changing modern art exhibitions. There’s also a Sarah Wiener restaurant next to it.

Haus am Waldsee *
A contemporary art exhibition space with a sculpture garden. It has a nice small cafe. Being a little bit out of the centre it feels like a nice break from the city to visit it.

It hosts big international exhibitions on art and cultural history.

Neue Nationalgalerie
A museum with a focus on early 20th century modern art.

Sights and entertainment

A walk up Auguststraße
All along this road are small art galleries.

Boat trips
There are lots of different places to get a boat from depending on where you are.

Brandenburg Gate
The classic tourist destination.

Charlottenburg Palace
Elaborate interior decoration and large gardens

CineStar IMAX at the Sony Center *
An IMAX that shows films in their original language.

East Side Gallery
A long section of the Berlin wall that has been painted with artworks.

The TV tower constructed by the GDR.

Hackesche Höfe courtyards
A series of enclosed courtyards with shops and cafes, and one of them has floor to ceiling graffiti.

Holocaust Memorial
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Museum Island
A concentration of major museums.

Oberbaum Bridge *
The double-decker bridge between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.

A walk up Oranienstraße
Walk from Görlitzer U-Bahn station up to Modulor art supplies looking into interesting shops.

Climb the dome at the parliament building.

Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park
A vast war memorial and military cemetery built to a Soviet design.

Tempelhof *
The former airport is now a giant park. Come and walk or cycle on the former runways.


Boxhagener Platz saturday food market
A neighbourhood market with good food to take home or eat right away.

Do You Read Me?!
A shop specialising in magazines from around the world.

LIV enamel
Just sells things made out of enamel.

Manufactum *
Traditional household and gardening goods.

Modulor art supplies *
A huge art and craft shop.

Mr Dead and Mrs Free
A record shop.

Otherland Buchhandlung
A science fiction and fantasy bookshop.

A small shop selling paper goods.

Modern furniture shop.

Hidden down a passage, a shop of luxury clothing.

Places to eat and drink

We’ve only tried the bakery, they do good strudel.

Alte Liebe Havel River
A restaurant on an old wooden boat on the Havel in the forest.

Aunt Benny *
A favourite place for brunch (pictured) on the weekend.

The Barn *
Good coffee in a few locations.

The Bird
Big messy burgers.

Bonanza Coffee Heroes *
Another good coffee place.

Buy your burgers from an old toilet in Kreuzburg.

Café Einstein
For the traditional food and feel of old Berlin.

Cocolo Ramen
A good ramen shop.

Companion Coffee in Voo *
A nice place to stop off when walking up Oranienstraße.

KaDeWe *
Go to the top floor to the huge cafe and get a giant piece of cake.

Le Bon
A nice cafe with good food.

Lokal *
Delicious food and a warm friendly atmosphere.

Markthalle Neun Street Food Thursday *
Lots of choice at the street food market on a Thursday.

Neue Heimat *
They hold lots of different markets and events here usually with some good street food.

How great to have a good cafe in such a prime tourist area!

Out of the centre

Botanic Gardens *
A large and varied botanic garden with greenhouses and a cafe.

Grunewald houses and forest *
Take a trip out to see the huge houses and walk in the forest.

Mexikoplatz station
An Art Nouveau S-bahn station.

Sanssouci in Potsdam
A large palace and gardens.

Wannsee beer garden *
On a hot day take the S-bahn out to Wannsee and relax in a beer garden.
