Night of Adventure

On Monday I had a very quick trip to Bristol to go to Night of Adventure with my sister. It’s an evening of talks by people who have done interesting adventures such as cycling round the world, walking the length of the Amazon, and so on. It was such an inspiring event and was raising money for Hope and Homes. The event was organised by Alastair Humphreys. If you don’t know him check out his site, make sure to watch some of his videos. I really recommend the event, if it comes anywhere near you do go, I think videos of the talks will be online soon too.

Visiting Bristol is as ever something that I like to do anyway as I get to hang out with my sister. Before the talk we had a quick dinner at Cafe Kino, then in the morning we popped out to the bakery around the corner from her house for croissants, and on my way to the station I got a lovely sandwich from Boston Tea Party. Bristol is great.

Bristol adventures

A few Fridays ago I jumped on a train to go and see my sister in Bristol. I had tickets for us to see the band Low, I haven’t included pictures of the show below but it was a great.

Before the show we went for a bit of high living and had dinner at Cafe Maitreya which is an organic vegetarian restaurant that has been rated the top place in the UK by the Vegetarian Society. The food was very good, interesting too, and I think the cost was reasonable for the standard of food. The above is my starter and dessert, I forgot to take a picture of the main as was too busy chatting/eating.

My sister and her friends are renting a house from a lady who spends half the year in somewhere like India, so the house is packed with interesting artifacts. I think it could be on The Selby for sure…

A talented fellow made this for my sister, tiny origami!

Breakfast the next day.

Then we went out around my sister’s neighbourhood.

We stopped to look at the Stokes Croft dog show, such a variety of cute dogs, the awards were things like ‘happiest dog’.

This is the boarded window of a Tesco that the local community really objects to.

aunts day

With my sister and my aunts we have an invention of ‘aunts day’ where we all meet up and have an adventure just us four once a year. This time it was to visit my sister in Bristol. It was freezing cold and very wintery but Bristol is always interesting. We had tea in the Watershed, a very good lunch at The Folkhouse, visited the Clifton Suspension Bridge across the Avon Gorge, and had gluten-free cake in the Rainbow Cafe. My sister had made us all knitted mushrooms to commemorate. I recommend setting up annual events to celebrate something, it doesn’t have to be aunts (although if you have nice aunts it is a good one!), I can think of favourite films day, cake day, spa day, stay in bed reading day, far away friend day, and so on :)

Back in Bristol

I popped over to Bristol on the train to see my sister. I was very happy to see her, and Bristol is a fun place. My sister is a good guide of the city too. The big painting of a head on that abandoned building makes me think of Berlin, both places have a lot of interesting graffiti and street art.

Do you see what’s unusual here…? It says ‘wino parking’ and ‘gnome parking’, someone has doctored the ‘no parking’ writing. So cool!

My sister asked me what I wanted to do and I had just before read about St Nicholas market on Kate’s site so I asked about that as I hadn’t been there. It turned out that two of my sister’s three housemates worked there! So we went along and had a good look about.

There’s a nice mix of things. I bought some ribbons from the craft shop and as it was nearing closing up time we got free salads from one of my sister’s housemate’s stalls.

Bristol is flooded with Tescos (like they are doing to Oxford too). There is a big backlash against the Tescos in Bristol. Any other city protesters might just organise a few flyers about a meeting but here in Bristol they go the full effort and have a huge painted sign ;)

On the way back to my sister’s house we stopped at Tart to try the chocolate cake, very good but hard to finish a whole piece.

The Gloucester Road where this place is has a lot of cafes and restaurants with seats out onto the road, it gives the street a nice atmosphere.

Back at my sister’s.

I don’t know if any one remembers me attending the opening of a hair salon on the Christmas Steps? Well it was the one year anniversary party! Hurrah!

My sister and I then popped around for one drink to The Wild Wood (which I have mentioned before).

Next day.

Breakfast and the paper.

Nice sink area.

Many faces are drawn on these grit bins in Bristol.

A million vintage/secondhand places.

No Tesco! I am with them on the no Tescos, I have my own boycott going.

My mother came over from Oxford and we went for lunch to the St Werburghs City Farm Cafe.

I had fishcakes and salad and the other two had risotto.

Piglets jumping around.

I hope to be back again very soon.

visiting Bristol

Taking advantage of our long weekend I went on a short trip to visit my sister on Bristol. She took me out to show me some of the places she likes, we always have fun when we get together :)

bristol_may10_002The Folk House cafe is tucked away off a main road in the Folk House adult education centre. The food was delicious.

bristol_may10_037On the same road there is a place that does bubble tea! So rare to find it. We both got Japanese Grape flavour, it was too sweet to finish all of it but it was still exciting to find it. I am wondering if I could make this and dial down the sweetness.

bristol_may10_033We had bubble and squeak for lunch and then later a brownie at The Better Food Co‘s organic supermarket. It was excellent. The Bristolians are lucky to have such a great unpretentious place that isn’t overpriced.
