Compton Verney

If we have to go somewhere and it looks like we might need (and have time for) a break half way I try to find somewhere interesting rather than go to a service station or something. Compton Verney was a place we stopped at on the way up to see Simon’s family. It’s right there by the M40 and has an interesting combination of an old house and grounds, modern art, and then a really really interesting British folk art collection. There is also a rather good fairly fancy restaurant. It was quite a surprise to walk up to an old building but inside it’s like the Tate Modern. The shed with the dome on it is Spiegelei by Jem Finer, it’s a camera obscura.

What a cool place, in particular the folk art, no pictures were allowed of that but you can see a few pictures here on the Compton Verney website. Oh and the white chairs, it seems people have weddings there, I hope it went well for whoever that was for.

a wedding

I didn’t post as usual on Friday as I was away at Simon’s sister’s wedding, it was a really fun weekend! I actually took hardly any pictures – too busy chatting. It was nice meeting all of Simon’s relations and I don’t think I did anything embarrassing, phew!

sunset

My very favourite things to photograph are the really big views, massive landscapes, mountains, skys, and so on. Maybe knowing that I need to practice other things, more detail pictures, urban scenes, around the house? I do love a landscape though ;) Just thinking aloud!

Clevedon

This post is a day later than usual (for the past few months I’ve been sticking to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) as we went to Cornwall for a long weekend. On the way down from Oxford to Cornwall I was studying the map to find an interesting place that we could stop half way and the name Clevedon jumped out at me because I remembered Kate’s pictures. We stopped to see the lovely old pier and had a sandwich in a cafe on the seafront. An interesting thing is that this pier is covered in little brass memorial plaques and the names of donors, so you can literally see the vast numbers of people who care about the pier.

Dunster Castle

The other place that we visited was the nearby Dunster Castle, the inside was closed to visitors that day but the grounds were interesting to clamber around and had nice views out over the hills and the Bristol Channel. It wasn’t at all sunny like it was on the Exmoor day. We then walked into Dunster Village for a cup of tea in a teashop. We save the rock and roll behaviour for the evenings ;)

I’ve started taking pictures in RAW format and so far I’m very pleased. Why I’d held off for so long is that I take so many pictures and as the RAW files are such large file sizes storage is an issue. I’m just trying to get more ruthless in deleting the duds and the maybes. I’ve pretty much stopped updating my Flickr but I aim to be back on it in the New Year, it’s one of my resolutions.
