St Ives, grey skies

It weather looks gloomy doesn’t it, it was very February, but it didn’t rain other than a light mist as we were leaving. There was an amazingly strong wind that you could lean right into, the telephone wires in the little streets would hum a little tune, and the sea really cracked on the shore. The weather may have been a little grey but not our moods, we LOVED St Ives, we are definitely hoping to go back there again. I liked the yellow lichen on the roofs, the houses piled up on each other, the huge sandy beaches and that there were plenty of little shops and restaurants. I would go back at this time of year too, lots of businesses were closed refurbishing themselves ready for the summer but there were still plenty of good eating options. That’s it for Cornwall photos for now although as I say I hope we can go back soon.

Oh but here’s one more picture, this is us sitting on a bench with our feet up on our cases waiting to go and get our train :)

The Night Riviera

We have been on our second trip to Cornwall. Why two trips to Cornwall? Well Simon and I like to go on adventures and sometimes instead of object type gifts at Christmas and our birthdays we give each other a trip. By coincidence this Christmas we both gave each other a trip to Cornwall, it’s pretty funny :) Simon’s trip-gift to me was driving down to Cornwall and staying near the Eden Project and in Padstow. My trip-gift to Simon was getting the Night Riviera Sleeper Train from London to Cornwall and staying in St Ives.

The Night Riviera was an excellent adventure, you can get on it in several places, we went to London Paddington to get on it at the beginning. You can board from 10:30pm, there was a steward who showed us to our two birth cabin, and we could have free tea and coffee. The beds were comfortable, there was a little sink under the side by the window and plenty of toilets down the corridor. The train set off at 11:45pm, it was such an unusual feeling to be dozing off while hurtling through the countryside. British trains are quite bumpy with lots of swaying and jolting, it’s not like Japanese trains that glide along, it was kind of like riding a rollercoaster in the dark. If you were a light sleeper you might not get that much sleep but Simon and I sleep like logs so we actually got a decent sleep.

In the morning the steward wakes you up with breakfast which was along the lines of airplane food. We got off at 7:30am in St Erth and caught the little connecting train which takes you to St Ives.

The St Ives station is right by the beach, we wheeled our cases down to the sea.

Then we rumbled our cases over the cobbles into the town.

Barbara Hepworth’s studio, St Ives

And her summerhouse…

Also the garden is packed with her sculptures, it’s a lovely spot hidden away by a high wall. Well worth visiting.

Looe and Padstow

Both at similar times of the day as the sun was setting. That’s it for Cornwall pictures from this visit. I didn’t take many food pictures while there, we did have a Cornish Pasty, and one of the nicest meals we had was as a treat we went to Rick Stein’s The Seafood Restaurant.
