Paris, and then the sun came out (lomo)

The cakes in the middle are from Bread and Roses, mine was a Mont Blanc which was great (more dense than the ones you get in Asia), and the other was a banana creme brulee tart which was fantastic. They were pretty intense and neither of us could finish.

We stayed at Hotel Clement because the internet rate for three nights was really reasonable for a nice place with bathroom. We also had a pretty view out over rooftops. The location in St Germain is great too for getting around and being near to eating places and nice shops. I’d stay there again.

Rainy Paris

I’d booked this trip many months ago thinking at this point in the year we’d need some kind of trip, not anticipating that I’d just have started a new job so would be quite topped up with things to think about and general adventure. Usually when going on trips I’m pretty organised, normally with some sort of rough schedule, maps, and lists of good places to visit. (Hey, I can’t help it, I’m a planner :) ) This time however I’d not had much of a chance to think about the trip beyond having booked the train and hotel months ago, so all I had was a 2008 pocket map and a few notes hastily scrawled notes. It was interesting to be without a plan, it involves more thinking on-the-hoof so perhaps having a plan is more relaxing as you can drift from one thing to the next without having to make so many decisions.

The first day it rained a bit, but that was cool, Paris is still pretty in the rain. We walked all over and visited places such as Grande Galerie de l’Evolution, Notre Dame, and Sacré-Cœur.

Paris: Tour Eiffel, Le Bon Marché, Musée du Louvre

These are the last of my Paris photos :)

Eiffel

Ah, the Eiffel Tower. We were there just as the sun was setting.

Undereiffel

Looking up at the inside I found to be one of the most interesting views – it is like something from War of the Worlds or something. This huge space age like structure. Amazing!

Lebonmarche

We went to have a look around the big food hall at Le Bon Marché. The sky was so grey Рsnow weather.

Louvreview

From inside the Louvre. We went on the first Sunday of the month when it is free to get in. SO much to see.

There, the end! Fin! Although depending on the compensation for our journey we may be back again sooner than we had planned :) There are a few more pictures on my Flickr also.

On the last day we woke up to find snow had fallen and we went to the La Défense business area to see the big arch. It's huge!

Paris: hotel and Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

Viewfrmbalcon

This was the view from our balcony. Our hotel was in Montmartre which turned out to be ideal as the area is very picturesque, it is 10 minutes walk from the Gare du Nord, and there are lots of places to eat and drink. We stayed in this hotel, it is a budget hotel (59 euros per night!) that had been recommended to friends of ours who stayed there and who then recommended it to us. It is very much a budget hotel, not a place that would be right for everyone (like my parents would not enjoy it there!), and it is not suitable if you are on your honeymoon or some other 'trip of a life-time', but for a budget quick visit type accommodation it was excellent. It was very clean, it felt very safe, it was in a good area, and the family running it seemed lovely. We paid something like 4 euros more per night to have a balcony and a shower in the room which was well worth it. Even though it was freezing I spent as much time as possible on the balcony watching the Paris ladies walking their little dogs.

Montmartre is so lovely. There was a tiny bit of hassle around the bottom of the steps of the Sacré-Cœur with a few people jostling for tourists money but the view was incredible. We were up there just as the bell was ringing out on Sunday evening. Magical.
